Kebetulan kantor dimana saya bekerja berselang 1 gedung dengan KPK… dan sering banget saya liat KPK di demonstrasi oleh massa… ada hal yang menarik… setiap kali ada demo selalu ada sound system mobile dekat dengan arena demo yang mengeraskan suara pembicara…

Sebagai contoh PickUp merah muda ini… foto ini saya ambil beberapa saat setelah selesai sebuah acara demo…

Hmm… banyak juga pihak yang memanfaatkan demo untuk mencari nafkah halal

The past month i’ve been looking for a way to streamline management of the color printers utilized in our head office, personally i favor to outsource them. At the moment head office utilize 2 Color Laser Printers most of the time they are used to printout reports to customers then sales and bid documents come next. Trying to manage them is a bother, at least once a week someone will complain to my staff about the availability.

Searching around in Jakarta i didn’t find any company which would rent color printers, instead Multifunction Color Photocopier vendors are more than happy to provide the service with copy and scan features added to my initial intention. After querying 3 vendors we came up with the best solution where we would lease a machine for 30 months @ 4.3 million a month and pay Rp 2.000 per page after 500 pages.

Now the next task is to convince management to ease my job. For that i had to dig into the purchase register and extract purchase of CMYK Toners and Imaging Drums from 1st of January till this present date. To my surprise we spent a total of Rp 142,371,500 just for consumables!!! After that I had to extract number of pages printed, for this I used the CUPS Print Report, and found out that 35,876 pages were printed.

From the above we can calculate that one page in average would cost Rp 3,968 utilizing 2 color copiers, and if we were to print 5,000 pages per month using a Multifunction Color Photocopier it would cost Rp 2,360 / page. What a dream cheaper solution yet lesser complaints…

Still freakin management wants me to comparing a higher grade printer with print capacity up to 10,000 pages per month against this Multifunction Color Photocopier.

Iseng jalan2 ke situs Dedy Milisdad, eh ternyata kemaren ultah google yang ke 9… Hebat ya perusahaan satu ini.. pesat banget perkembangannya…

Kalo dilihat di wikipedia [1]… server pertama yang mereka pake produksi di taun 1999 aja udah keren…

The original hardware (ca. 1998) that was used by Google when it was located at Stanford University, included:

* Sun Ultra II with dual 200 MHz processors, and 256MB of RAM. This was the main machine for the original Backrub system.
* 2 x 300 MHz Dual Pentium II Servers donated by Intel, they included 512MB of RAM and 9 x 9GB hard drives between the two. It was on these that the main search ran.
* F50 IBM RS/6000 donated by IBM, included 4 processors, 512MB of memory and 8 x 9GB hard drives.
* Two additional boxes included 3 x 9GB hard drives and 6 x 4GB hard drives respectively (the original storage for Backrub). These were attached to the Sun Ultra II.
* IBM disk expansion box with another 8 x 9GB hard drives donated by IBM.
* Homemade disk box which contained 10 x 9GB SCSI hard drives.

Sepertinya mereka sudah memikirkan scalability… dari awal cluster server diatas… hingga tahun 2005 udah punya 450,000 server!!!

Kemacetan di Jakarta merupakan hal yang selalu dijumpai, terutama saat jam berangkat dan pulang kantor. Untuk menghindari hal ini saya sering berangkat dengan menggunakan kereta Sudirman Express naik dari stasiun Pondok Ranji dan turun stasiun Sudirman.

Pagi ini sambil membaca Koran Tempo mulai terdengar sebuah band memainkan lagu dengan lirik yang tidak biasanya. Sebenarnya band 4 orang ini bukanlah sesuatu yang aneh tetapi mereka menyanyikan lagu Telkomselsiaga, spontan saya melihat kearah mereka dan ternyata mereka semua menggunakan kaos merah bertuliskan Telkomselsiaga.

Keren juga, saya pikir ini merupakan ide yang benar-benar kreatif. Mereka membuka “show” ini lagu pesan sponsor kemudian diselingi satu lagu bebas kembali mereka menyanyikan lagu sponsor mereka. Dan karena sudah mendapatkan sponsor mereka tidak lagi meminta uang kepada pendengar. Terlintas di pikiran saya “apakah ide ini berawal dari pihak Pomosi Telkomsel atau pengamen yang mencari sponsor?”.

Terlintas juga di pikiran saya… “Bagaimana kalau pengamen atau pengemis jalanan yang biasa berada di sekitar lampu lalu lintas di kasih kaos sponsor?” mereka cukup lewat saja di depan kendaraan yang berhenti… secara tidak langsung pengendara kendaraan akan melihat pesan sponsor… sementara duta promosi dibayar oleh pihak sponsor sesuai lama mereka berada di situ… Tentuanya kini mereka tidak perlu membawa anak kecil dan berharap belas kasihan dari pengendara…
